 :june 17, 1972 - watergate office building (democratic national committee headquarters) five men arrested for breaking in
 :motivation: presidential election (nixon vs. mcgovern)
 :comittee to reelect the president (crep) - five men have papers showing that they are employed by crp break in to bug the democrat office
 :two former white house aids working forcrep are also arrested (g. gordon liddy and e. howard hunt
 :all seven are indicted on september 15
 :none of the seven men say crep or the white house told them to break in
 :nixon goes on to defeat mcgovern in a landslide winning 60.8% of the vote
 :on december 8, hunt's wife dies in a plane crash.  she's carrying 10,000 in 100 dollar bills (hush money she was taking to chicago) this causes rumors
 :feb. 7, 1973 rumors about corrupt financing and political dirty tricks by nixon's crep.
 : establishes a select committee on presidential campaign activities chaired by sen. sam ervin
 :mar. 23, 1973.  one of the seven men in the burglary admits that he was pressured to remain silent and reveals others involved in the breaking (john mitchell, former atty. general, chairman of crep, as the overal boss)
 :woodward and bernstein work for washington post expose many watergate secrets via a source (high up) named deep-throat
 :april 20, 1973, patrick gray, acting diector of the fbi, resignes.  he admits he destroyed evidence about watergate and nixon's aids told him to destry
 :april 30, 1973, nixon's chief of staff h. r. haldeman and domestic affairs assistant john ehrlichman and presidential council john dean resign.
 :april 30, 1973, nixon goes on tv and denys any knowledge of a coverup in the white house regarding the white house
 :june 25, 1973, john dean accuses nixon of being involved in the coverup
 :july 16, 1973, white house aid alexander butterfield tells ervin that nixon had recorded all oval office conversations
 :this leads to executive priviledge
 :october 10, vice president spiro agnew resignes after pleading nocontest to tax evasion charges
 :two days later, nixon nominated ford by power of the 25th amendment
 :october 20, saturday night massacre  -nixon orders attorney general elliot richardson to fire watergate special prosecutor archibald cox
 :cox refused to accept nixon's comprimize of a synopsis of the tapes
 :richardson and his assistant refuse and both resign

 :after this, the house begins to consider impeachment of the president
 :october 23, 1973 - house judiciary committee decides to investigate the president and leon jaworski replaces ervin as special prosecutor
 :october 30, 1973 - nixon reluctantly turns over the oval office tapes, but they realize that two are missing
 :november 13, 1973 - major contributors to nixon's campaign pled guilty to illegal contributions
 :november 21, 1973 - investigators learn that one of the tapes contains an 18 minute gap
 :november 30, 1973 - krogh headed the whte house "plumbers" unit pled guilty to charges stemming from the break-in at the office of daniel ellsberg's (leaked pentagon papers,) psychiatrist
 :six defendants are sentenced for their role (hunt - 2.5 to 8 years and 10,000 dollar fine.
 :january 4, 1974 - president nixon refuses to surrender 500 tapes and documents subpoenaed.
 :march 1, 1974 - seven former whitehose staff members including haldeman, ehrlichman, former aty. gen. john mitchel are indicted for obstructing the investigation of the watergate breakin.
 :july 24, 1974 - the supreme court rules unanimously nixon must turn over the tapes. eight hours later, the white house announces that they will comply
 :july 27, 1974 - the house judiciary committee approves two articles of impeachment against nixon (obstruction of justice, repeatidly violating his oath of office)
 :july 60, 1974 - a third charge is reccommended (unconstitutional defiance of committee subpoenas)
 :august 5, 1974 - the whitehouse releases transcripts of a conversation with haldeman and it shows six days after the break-in, nixon ordered a halt to the fbi investigation.
 :august 8, 1974 - he announces his resignation effective noon the following day
